How to review camera, microphone, location and contact access without breaking the apps you need.
App permissions determine which sensitive parts of a device an application can use. Years of quick “Allow” taps can leave old apps with access they no longer need.
Start with the sensitive categories
Review location, microphone, camera, contacts, photos and accessibility access in the operating system’s privacy settings. Look for apps you no longer recognize or use.
Match access to the feature
A map needs location while you navigate, but may not need it continuously. A chat app needs the microphone during a call, not necessarily in the background. Choose one-time or while-in-use access where available.
Watch for indirect access
Photo pickers and file selectors can often share one item without giving an app access to the entire library. Accessibility and device-administrator permissions are especially powerful and should be reserved for software you trust.
The bottom line
Revisit permissions every few months and after major app updates. Removing unused apps is often the cleanest privacy improvement.
