How to Audit Browser Extensions
A quick method for spotting extensions with more access than their job requires.
Browser extensions can modify pages, read browsing data and interact with accounts. That power makes them useful—and worth reviewing.
Remove what you do not use
Every installed extension expands the browser’s attack surface. Uninstall abandoned tools, duplicates and anything you no longer recognize.
Read the access request literally
An extension that can read and change data on every site may see page content, including sensitive information. Prefer tools that work on specific sites or only after you click them.
Check ownership and updates
A previously trusted extension can change after an acquisition. Review recent release notes, store listings and permission changes, especially when the browser displays a new warning.
