Home Router Security Checklist
The small router settings that make the biggest difference to a home network.
The router sits between a home network and the wider internet, yet it is often left with years-old settings. A short maintenance routine can remove the most common weaknesses.
Secure administration
Change default administrator credentials, install firmware updates and disable management from the public internet unless you have a specific, secured need for it.
Use modern Wi-Fi protection
Choose WPA3 when all devices support it, or WPA2 with a strong passphrase. Disable obsolete security modes and Wi-Fi Protected Setup if it is not needed.
Separate less-trusted devices
A guest or IoT network can keep visitors, smart appliances and inexpensive devices away from computers that hold sensitive files. Review connected devices for names you do not recognize.
The bottom line
Back up the router configuration after making changes and set a reminder to check for updates. Replace hardware that no longer receives security support.
