A Simple Backup Strategy That Survives Mistakes
How to create multiple recoverable copies of important files and verify that they work.
A backup is a separate, recoverable copy of data. Synchronization alone is not enough because accidental deletion or ransomware can propagate to every synced device.
Use more than one copy
Keep working files plus at least two backups on different storage types, with one copy away from the device or location. Cloud version history can help, but check its retention period.
Automate the routine
A backup that depends on memory eventually stops happening. Schedule it, keep one removable copy disconnected when not in use and encrypt portable drives that contain sensitive data.
Practice recovery
Open a selection of restored files and periodically test a full folder recovery. A green status icon confirms a job ran; it does not prove that the result is complete and readable.
The bottom line
Prioritize irreplaceable photos, documents and recovery codes first. Software can be reinstalled; unique personal data cannot.
