Good project fits

Common uses include programming practice, dashboards, network monitoring, home automation and electronics projects that need general-purpose input/output pins.

The board is not the whole cost

Budget for a power supply, storage, case, cooling and any adapters. Software support and community documentation can matter more than a small difference in processor specifications.

Know the limits

A board may use a different processor architecture from a desktop PC, and some applications will not be available. Storage cards also wear faster than drives designed for constant server writes.
