What Is a Numeric Keypad?
What the number pad does, where Num Lock fits and when a compact keyboard is enough.
A numeric keypad is a block of number and arithmetic keys arranged for fast data entry. It is commonly found on full-size keyboards and on the right side of many larger laptops.
Why the layout exists
The grid lets a practiced user enter long sequences of numbers with one hand. Accountants, spreadsheet users and people working with measurements often find it faster than the number row.
What Num Lock changes
Num Lock switches the keypad between numeric input and navigation functions on many keyboards. If the keys suddenly move the cursor instead of typing numbers, check the Num Lock state.
Built-in or separate
Compact keyboards save desk space by omitting the pad. A separate USB or wireless keypad is a flexible option for occasional numeric work.

Choose based on the work you actually do. A number pad is valuable for sustained data entry, but unnecessary for many writing and browsing setups.
